Elves FAQ

(Frequently Asked Questions about Elfin People)

Every child nowadays, when being asked about elves, will surely reply that elves are the funny Santa helpers in the supermarkets at Xmas time and are there to wrap up Xmas gifts and games. So, we'll have to disappoint them:

Who are the elves? - No kidding.
Elves (ancient-icelandic alfar) are humanlike supernatural creatures in European mythology, spirits or minor Gods of nature. According to the most legends, they are immortal and invisible. These beings are described as mischievous, light-hearted, joyous spirits, who sometimes get in contact with people and may help or harm them.

Where do they live?
Mostly in Northern-European folklore and modern fantasy books. Lately they have been invited to act in the movies (Lord of the Rings) and computer games (Elythril: The Elf Treasure, a matching game by Absolutist).

Where do they come from?
Originating from the Ancient Germanic mythology, the images of elves as good-natured spirits were transferred and survived in the Northern European folklore. With the image of light spirits was transferred to the French, English, Scotch and Irish cultures. During the recent fifty years the popularity of elves has been sharply increased after the J.R.R. Tolkien "Lord of the Rings" release in 1954, which caused a real elf boom around the world. The brilliant philologist depicted the elfin folk in a fresh way yet very closely to the ancient legends and thus, delivered a new interpretation of the elves, their culture and history.

Since that time elf became a crucial character of nearly all fantasy books; people from many countries report being in contact with elves or consider themselves to be true elves.

What do elves look like?
No one will dare to tell you that exactly because, as already stated above, elves are invisible. In the Norse legends, elves are described as human-like creatures who are shorter in size than people. Most of them are dressed up in beautiful clothes made of the magic and shining fabrics. Elves are known to be extremely beautiful and possessing magical power. Elves from the Norse legends have wings. But the main peculiarity of elfin people is: pointed ears.

Are elves good or bad for humans?
Although it is believed that elves are mostly good-natured creatures aiming to help people, in some English tales they are said to be in contact with demons. From the Norse legends elves are known as the spirits of fertility and nature protectors, whose main function is protect forests, mountains and meadows they live in. On the other hand, it is believed that elves may come to people's home along with other light spirits at Xmas.
