Norse people not only founded elfin myths, but also came up with the surprisingly detailed history of the elfin folk. They founded the concept of elves as semi-divine human-sized creatures who were associated with the cult of fertility, nature and ancestors. In the Nordic mythology there appeared a separate type of elves - dark elves, or dwarves - who were believed to be evil spirits.

In the Scandinavian folklore elves were portrayed as beautiful and light-hearted females with the wings who lived in the forest, hills and mountains with the elf king. They are depicted dancing in the meadows or in the forest on the foggy morning.

In the medieval Germany elves were believed to be mischievous spirits who brought nightmares to sleepers. They often sat on the chest of a sleeping man, and thus, caused terrible dreams.
